Thought Creates the World…

“Thought creates the world and then says I didn’t do it.”

I hadn’t even heard of this quote until 5 months ago but I love it! It is a quote by David Bohm, one of the most influential physicists of the 20th century and a front runner in the field of quantum physics. I realised how true it is when I reflected on my resigning from a post a while back.  I was working my notice and was feeling quite disgruntled as I felt I had moved on in my head and then realised it was down to me whether I was going to have a good or bad experience.  I had to look at the money I was earning as a transition period and get on with it.

I was not ready for what followed.  I had the best time at work that I had had for a number of years!  Looking back, I realise the role that thought had played in my not enjoying periods of time at work; feeling stressed and overwhelmed as well as undervalued.  It was coming from my thinking.  I know this now on an even deeper level because during my notice period nothing had changed on the outside.  I still did the same job, in the same place with the same colleagues.  I was still occasionally shouted at by my boss.  The only thing that had changed was my thinking about it all.

Whether I have good or bad experiences now are not based upon anyone or anything other than my thinking in the moment.  The more aware I become of this, the more easily I can learn what to pay attention to and what to let go of.  It creates a sense of calm.  I can still get up in my head but I know when this happens that it is not a reflection of my life; it is just a reflection of my thoughts at the moment.  I don’t even know what I am thinking at times but just recognise it through my feelings; allow it to pass when it is ready and enjoy it when it lifts.

I no longer feel I am fighting against anything and am just participating in the human experience.  I feel in flow and a far greater sense of calm.  Sometimes, it is only when I talk to others do I appreciate how far I have come and I love it!

So next time you feel anxious or stressed, just take a moment to look at what you think is responsible for it and then remember this quote:

“Thought creates the world and then says I didn’t do it.”
